We specialise in unlocking confidence and producing results in writing skills for students from kindergarten to year 10.

Designed and delivered by real teachers.

Since graduating from the University of Sydney in 2019, with a bachelor of primary education, we each bring over 5 years of experience as NESA-accredited teachers in classrooms, teaching different ranges of students from kindergarten to year 12.

Our diverse and dynamic experiences have allowed us to observe, trial, and refine the most effective teaching practices to help students improve in English, especially in writing skills.

We are trained and experienced in marking NAPLAN writing papers and our expertise extends to OC, Selective, Scholarship and high school writing examinations.

We offer a range of English lessons covering all aspects of the language, with a focus on writing. Our main options include:

Summary

  • weekly 1 hour small group English lessons (Orbit)

  • 10 week intensive writing workshop program (Moonshot)

Weekly β€œOrbit” English lessons ✨

Definition: Orbit means the Earth rotating around the sun over the course of a year

These are comprehensive, weekly one-hour lessons that cover all the main skills in English, including spelling, vocabulary, grammar, punctuation, reading, and speaking. They are built around a strong focus on writing.

Term (10 week) β€œMoonshot” writing workshops πŸš€

Definition: Moonshot means a giant leap of success

These workshops have limited spots and run each term. They are intensive writing courses aimed at boosting each child’s writing results. Each workshop focuses on either narrative or persuasive writing, providing students with opportunities to produce writing samples that are analysed in detail by an expert marker. Reports are provided to discuss improvements with both parents and students.

Why writing?

Summary

  • Writing is one of the most important skills

  • After teaching different subjects in primary and high school, we have realised every subjects requires writing

  • e.g. for short answer and extended response questions in subjects including Science, Technology, History, Geography, Commerce and Legal studies

We have noticed students continuing to struggle with writing at higher levels of the education system. This has lead to realising the importance of writing not only in English but also across all other subjects, with the exception of Mathematics.

While Mathematics is a significant subject that stands alone and one we are also very passionate about, we have made the decision to initially concentrate all of our focus on developing learning content, systems and resources for English. This is to ensure the highest standard is monitored and achieved, and we believe that strong comprehension skills are fundamental to understanding problem-solving and other worded questions in Mathematics.

Subjects such as History, Geography, Commerce, and Legal Studies all require short answers and extended responses. Students struggle not only with essay writing in English but also written responses in these subject areas.

We believe that preparation for the HSC begins with the development of strong writing foundations starting as early as kindergarten and continuing through the junior years. This ensures that students become confident writers equipped with the skills necessary to tackle essays in university, compose professional emails in the workforce or complete copywriting for their business. Whatever their goals may be beyond the education system, our goal is to prevent students from becoming unconfident writers who dread exams and avoid writing tasks altogether, and help them achieve competence in writing.

The elephant in the room: AI…

  • AI may not take over the world, but the people who know how to use it might

  • AI can provide an advantage over others when used ethically as a tool

We also recognise the undeniable rise of AI which is highly accessible to students in this modern age. Some may fear AI while others may all too eagerly misuse it. We believe that AI is an incredibly powerful resource with the potential to assist us for the better when used correctly and ethically. This is why we have carefully integrated activities to model proper use and give students the opportunity to use AI as a useful thinking partner to help broaden and refine their ideas, and develop their critical thinking skills.

AI platforms hold an unfathomable amount of data, and it is up to us to ask the right questions in order to distill that data into perspectives that resonate with our own ideas. These perspectives can then be considered and utilised to help shape our own written responses to a certain topic. We have designed specific activities to facilitate the collaboration of AI with our students so they may develop the skill of asking the most effective questions to receive optimal feedback.

Mindset.

Discipline, confidence, and empathy are invaluable traits that AI cannot cultivate; they must be developed within ourselves. At Neo Alumni, our teachers uphold this principle as part of our teaching philosophy and actively support the cultivation of these traits in all our students.

Our mission goes beyond fostering a growth mindset filled with empty words and baseless affirmations. Instead, we envision a formidable mindset for our students, built upon a foundation of stackable evidence showcasing instances where each child has successfully displayed these traits.

Our virtual help desk is open.

While we may open face-to-face centres in the near future, we have chosen to begin delivering our services online for the convenience of our students.
